Hundreds of NC A&T State University students filled Greensboro streets Thursday for a 40-minute walk from their campus to an early voting site, partly to do their civic duty and partly as a show of strength.

It was the second Greensboro student voter march this month, following an event last week that drew national attention.

Earlier this year, state and local elections officials denied students’ petitions for an early voting site on campus for this year’s primary and general elections. Students decided to show the power of their numbers with a march to cast their ballots.

Compared to the 2022 midterm, unaffiliated voters have the largest increase in turnout so far this year. According to an analysis of state voter data by Catawba College political scientist Michael Bitzer, unaffiliated voters were up by 72% over 2022 in the first week of early voting. Democrats were up by 62%. Republican turnout has increased by just 1.7%.

That looks like good news for Democrats, since polls show unaffiliated voters breaking for Democrats this year, thanks to high inflation and fuel costs, and an unpopular war. But there are still ten more days of early voting for Republicans to catch up.

The City of Durham is one of 30 cities recently selected to participate in a new Bloomberg Philanthropies housing initiative to bring funding and expertise to cities to help increase housing supply and expand options.

Participating cities will receive $450,000 to $750,000 to pilot technology that quickly clears construction approvals, engage architects to draft permit-ready plans, or hire staff to push stalled projects along.
