In the waning days of summer, Stacy Staggs should be thinking about how to celebrate the birthday of her twin girls, who turn 13 in September. Instead, the Charlotte mother is anxiously waiting for Congress to return from their August recess to address a growing healthcare crisis.
Staggs’ daughters were born prematurely and spent months in the intensive care unit at the Levine Children’s Hospital. While Sara and Emma have complex medical needs, Emma’s condition and disabilities are so serious she qualifies for North Carolina‘s Medicaid CAP/C waiver.

When members of county boards of election disagreed on whether to offer Sunday hours during early voting for this year’s midterm elections, the NC Board of Elections usually went along with plans to cut them.
Ten North Carolina counties that had Sunday voting in the last midterm election won’t have any this year as a result of state Board of Elections votes this week.

WASHINGTON — IndyCar took over the streets of the nation’s capital for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, the last in a series of events coordinated and promoted by President Donald Trump to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Just over two dozen racers zipped through a 1.66-mile course, reaching speeds up to 190 miles per hour as they traced a course down Pennsylvania and Independence avenues, crossing the National Mall twice, for the first-ever IndyCar series event in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has not slowed his pursuit of central policy goals and personal passions, even after major setbacks at the U.S. Supreme Court and other federal courts.
The high court in its 2026 term delivered blows to Trump’s core campaign promises to upend a constitutional provision governing who becomes a U.S. citizen at birth and to swiftly address the growing national debt with “trillions of dollars” raised by taxing imports.
