Trump stumps for Whatley + AG Jackson requests new Duke rate class for data centers

GASTONIA — North Carolina resident Charles Whatley hasn’t voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since Jimmy Carter in 1976. It was his first time voting.

In the past 50 years, he said he’s alternated between choosing Republicans and independents, depending on who’s running.

A day after President Donald Trump delivered a grim campaign speech in Gastonia, Gov. Josh Stein described Trump’s categorization of North Carolina as “political nonsense.”

In his stump speech for Republican U.S. Senate candidate Michael Whatley, Trump portrayed the state as one of the most violent in the nation. He referred to North Carolina as “criminally dangerous,” and described its cities as “blood-soaked killing fields.”

N.C. Board of Elections Director Sam Hayes said the board will serve all voters regardless of party.

His statement came after a state appellate judge wrote a blistering assessment of election administration after it shifted to Republican control.

North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson is asking the state Utilities Commission to make a new rate class for Duke Energy’s data center customers, his office said on Monday.

Jackson argued the separate class would prevent data centers from shifting energy costs to residential consumers.

“Duke Energy is onboarding an unprecedented number of data centers without a clear plan on how to protect ratepayers from higher rates and unacceptable risk,” Jackson said in a statement.
